Sunglasses Trends — Summer 2013

The fashion forward are looking back in time this season for style inspiration, at least when it comes to sunglasses. Nationally, certain trends have carried over from last summer including cat-eye frames with modern styling. Locally, buyers are gradually moving back to smaller lenses and show a strong preference for classic brands like Ray-Ban, Oakley and Maui Jim.

Bigger lenses and chunky plastic frames modernize round lenses, first made popular by John Lennon in the 1970s.

Lucite (see-through) and translucent plastic frames in a variety of colors are catching on, although opaque “candy colors” are still a stylish option for the bold and beautiful. (Check out Gwen Stefani’s luscious turquoise and candy-apple red combo).

Glittery embellishments and bold patterns are hot (think florals and animal prints), and even neon is making an appearance in subtle ways, “like just making the insides of the frames a bright color, so you can see a whisper of fun if you look at the right angle,” according to The Everygirl’s April shopping guide. Or, just the stems of the frame are colored.

For men, “The big thing right now is matte instead of shiny frames,” according to GQ, although there are still plenty of gold and silver frames and embellishments to be found in the latest men’s collections.

For both sexes, reflective lenses are making a comeback, but with modern flare — the lenses tend to be tinted or smoky instead of mirrored like a motor cycle cop’s (circa 1980).

Insight Eyecare carries the brands shown here, but these particular styles are not necessarily in stock. Only in-stock nonprescription sunglasses are half off through July 3. As always, no sales tax applies when you purchase eyewear from us.
