Glory and Grace: Women’s High-performance Sunglasses Offered in Sleeker, Trendier Styles

Like Maui Jim and Oakley before them, the folks at Costa Del Mar in recent years have come out with high-performance women’s sunglasses that don’t compromise on style. Take Costa’s new Anaa sunglass frames. They offer the performance and protection features Costa is famous for and have “teacup-shaped” lenses that you may find more flattering than unisex styles.

Other feminized lens shapes by Costa (as described by Eyecessorize Blog reviewers) include soft oval, angular cat eye, upswept rectangle and oversized butterfly.

New from Maui Jim is the Orchid line of women’s sunglasses in snazzy color combinations like tortoise with raspberry and tortoise with peacock. And Oakley has come out with the Proxy line of shades that “take proportional cues from retro starlets and performance cues from modern super stars.”

Granted, some of the fashion frames are meant for “daily active life” (as Oakley puts it) as opposed to rugged outdoor and athletic pursuits.

Because of the higher cost of polarized lenses, it’s not unreasonable for performance-driven women and men alike to want a pair that looks good for everyday wear. We expect to see such double-duty shades as manufacturers vie for market share.

Purple reign

Speaking of performance-driven female athletes, Dr. Pinkerton’s daughter Ali is a purple-and-gold wearing pole vaulter and cheerleader at Hallsville Junior High. She’s also walked in several Walk to End Alzheimer’s events in honor of her grandfather. Since so much purple cycles through the laundry, we thought it would be fitting to share this Vision Plus magazine feature, Purple is Popping, that pulls together the plethora of purple sunglass options (mauves, amethysts, lilacs, deep purples) from Maui Jim.

Born to run

A serious runner reviews Maui Jim’s Sugar Beach sunnies and is impressed by their incredible lightness: “I thought I might break them. But no, they’re not fragile. I wore them around a little before taking them on a run and I could barely feel them on my face. But it didn’t take long to trust that they were securely attached to my head. I ran in 90+ degree weather wearing these beauties and was amazed that I had no indents or sore spots on my nose or my temples. I use them for all my runs now.” Read more.

I can see clearly now

We at Insight Eyecare believe that everyone can benefit from the comfort and clarity of polarized sunglasses, not just sporty types. But would your average mom agree they’re worth the cost? This mom, whose involvement in sports is limited to watching her sons play baseball, reviews a pair of Maui Jim sunnies: “They sit nicely on my nose, don’t squeeze my temples, and the coverage is thorough. It’s the first time I’ve worn glasses that don’t allow any light in either from the top or bottom. But what you really want to know is, how do I see in them, right? Well, let me tell you, it is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. Everything is unbelievably crisp and clear. Colors are brighter and bolder. It’s genuinely something everyone needs to experience!” Read more.
